As with any technical
subject there is a lot of jargon. There are many parts to an LPG conversion, many companies which
claim to have the best in terms of economy, green
fuel helping the environment and the many technical
aspects to a conversion.
The company was formed in
late 1998, when interest in alternative fuels,
especially LPG as a road fuel, was becoming more
widespread in the UK. For the previous four
years Rob Priest, AFS Managing Director and Rob
Carnell, AFS Operations manager, had enjoyed
much success as a core part of the GTC
Motorsport team, racing the formidable McLaren
F1 GTR under the Gulf Oil banner, with numerous
victories, including 1996 FIA GT championship
winners and class win, 2nd overall at the
prestigious Le Mans 24 Hour race in 1997.
AFS became an LPGA approved
full member in June 1999 and were added to the
Energy Saving Trust Powershift Register at about
the same time. The company also gained ISO 9002
and 14001 accreditation for LPG sales,
installation and servicing in March 2001
In 2001 AFS was awarded a
prestigious DTI Smart award for the design and
construction of a 5KW Alkaline Fuel Cell system.
Other fully operational units have been
demonstrated at numerous events and exhibitions
including the Hanover Fuel Cell Fair, Grove
Symposium, London and the Senate, Washington DC.
Rising tax on Petrol and a low tax on LPG
means that
LPG conversion is an economical
choice for all motorists. With an overall
lower cost for the fuel and an exemption to
congestion charges, this all means handfuls of
cash to spend on something more interesting.
